Rhinoplasty Is More Than Cosmetic Surgery

Before and After RhinoplastyRhinoplasty has been performed for many years and is one of the most requested plastic surgery procedures. The popularity of the “nose job” isn’t surprising, as the nose is a central feature of the face and can affect the entire facial profile. When the size or shape of the nose isn’t complementary to the other facial characteristics, many people want to change the nasal structures. Since nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, has been mostly spotlighted as a purely cosmetic procedure, what many people don’t know is how it can also help a person achieve a better functioning nose.

Breathe Better With Septoplasty

Septoplasty can be combined with rhinoplasty to improve more than just the nasal appearance. Some people have a condition where the septum, the tissue that separates the left and right nasal airways, is crooked (deviated septum). A deviated septum can obstruct breathing, and it is a common problem among patients who snore or have sleep apnea, which can become life-threatening if left untreated.

Dr. Rey can perform septoplasty to correct a deviated septum by straightening the tissue and reducing the projections inside the nose to improve breathing. He will create an incision across the columella (the thin strip of tissue between the nostrils at the base of the nose) and will correct a blocked nasal passage caused by the crooked nasal cartilage. The skin will be draped over the newly shaped nasal structures, and incisions will be closed. Patients will be able to breathe more efficiently with better aligned and separated nasal airways.

Cosmetically Enhance the Nose

Often, septoplasty patients see having nose surgery as an opportunity to combine it with rhinoplasty. In addition to correcting a deviated septum, they may also choose to have some cosmetic “touch-ups” at the same time. They can have the nose reduced, augmented, or straightened to create a more harmonious facial profile.

Rhinoplasty Can Correct:

  • Nose size
  • Nose width
  • Humps or depressions on the bridge
  • A nasal tip that is large, drooping, or upturned
  • Nostrils that are too large
  • Nasal asymmetry

After undergoing septoplasty and rhinoplasty, patients can achieve a nose that functions properly with an improved appearance. Patients will be able to breathe better with unobstructed airway passages and achieve an overall better facial profile.
